Thomson has purchased the Menzies Building, near Wachner Place – directly opposite Invercargill’s new retail precinct, being developed by Invercargill Central Limited.

It is hoped the 150-room, 4.5 star hotel will open in late 2023. It will follow the opening of the ILT’s new 4.5 star, 80-room project The Langlands, which is set to open early next year.

Transport World executive director Joc O’Donnell says it’s great to see so much development happening throughout Invercargill.

“It’s fantastic to see so much confidence in Invercargill’s future,” she says. “Transport World is home to not just visitor attractions and our events arm, TW Events & Incentives, but boutique accommodation offering The Lodges at Transport World as well. We know just how much demand there is for higher-end accommodation in the city and we really welcome another player coming into the mix. Growth throughout the city benefits all of us.”

TW Events & Incentives events manager Adam Reinsfield says the addition of not one, but two, large-scale hotels will add to Invercargill’s appeal when it comes to clients looking to host events in the south.

“Anything that adds another string to the city’s bow is fantastic news,” he says. “As a region, having a variety of options available to potential clients will take us to the next level. I’m really excited to see our ability to compete on a par with other urban centres taken up a notch – watch this space!”

The news about the new hotel development comes hot on the heels of further progress made in the inner-city rebuild project.

Invercargill Central Limited recently announced that it had purchased the Reading Cinemas building and surrounding land, confirming the cinema as a key tenant within the development – creating another opportunity for TW Events & Incentives to include this in bespoke incentives packages prepared for clients, Reinsfield says.
