Road transport industry event goes virtual

Challenges navigating a changing Covid-19 landscape have seen New Zealand’s largest road transport industry event shift to a digital format.

Organisers of the annual Mobil 1 Delvac NZ Road Transport Hall of Fame have made the difficult decision to cancel the physical event, set to be held at Bill Richardson Transport World in Invercargill on November 12, and will instead hold an online version.

The event, driven by HWR directors Jocelyn and Scott O’Donnell, is normally attended by more than 500 people from throughout the Australasian road transport industry. With international borders still closed the event was set to be a more intimate affair, and had already been postponed once due to the Delta outbreak in August.

Joc O’Donnell says it was a difficult decision to make, as planning for the event takes a full 12 months and it is highly-anticipated each year.

“We’re really saddened that our guests are unable to gather together and celebrate the achievements of this year’s inductees,” Joc O’Donnell says. “The Mobil 1 Delvac NZ Road Transport Hall of fame is a once-a-year opportunity for our entire industry to come together. However, the safety and comfort of our guests is our first and foremost concern. We’re looking forward to coming together once more on 30 September, 2022.”

Scott O’Donnell says while this year’s digital format will look and feel a little bit different to the event in previous years, it will still give industry members the opportunity to pay tribute to the contributions of the six 2021 inductees.

“Unfortunately a large contingent of guests from Auckland and the Waikato were meant to attend as well, which further contributed to the decision to move online,” he says. “Moving to an online event will mean everybody who wants to attend is able to do so, regardless of their location, and together we will be able to recognise those being inducted for 2021. Guests who would normally attend are encouraged to get a group together to watch, if they can do so safely.”

An online silent auction will conclude in the days following the event’s live feed. This will continue the Mobil 1 Delvac NZ Road Transport Hall of Fame’s support of its charity of choice: ProActive Drive Youth Driver Education Trust, which supports driver education training for young New Zealanders.

TW Events & Incentives event manager Adam Reinsfield says once details for the online event are finalised, these will be shared with attendees.

“Challenging times, like those we continue to navigate, highlight how important it is to have strong partnerships and friendships in life. We have to say a huge thank you to the sponsors of the Mobil 1 Delvac NZ Road Transport Hall of Fame and ask that our attendees continue to support them too.”
