Share

If you and your organisation are yet to visit the deep south – you’re missing out.

An underrated gem, Southland is once again easier than ever to reach, with Air New Zealand resuming its direct jet service between Auckland and the city of water and light.

The TW Events & Incentives team are Southland destination experts – and we love to share the world-class experiences our region is home to with our guests. We’ve asked the team to tell us their must-visit tips for people spending time in the south.

Bill Richardson Transport World - Rachel Robinson

What makes Bill Richardson Transport World special?

That it all started with one man, but the collection has grown into something so far beyond that. The story behind how the collection began, and how it progressed into what it is today, is part of a bigger story that teaches guests about the history, people and places of Southland.

What surprises people when they visit this attraction?

Definitely the calibre of the collection. Some of the vehicles at Bill Richardson Transport World are the only ones of their kind in the world, like the 1940 Dodge Airflow tanker. There are Model T Fords, pretty much every classic truck ever, and vehicles like the Volkswagen Kombis. It really is world-class.

Why should people come to Invercargill and visit Bill Richardson Transport World?

Because it’s something you can’t see anywhere else in New Zealand. After lockdown people are thinking about travelling around their own backyard more, and Bill Richardson Transport World is as good as any collection anywhere else in the world. It’s a lot more than classic cars – there is literally something for everyone.

British 1936 Brough Superior SS80 Classic Motorcycle Mecca Motorcycle Museum Invercargill 13

Classic Motorcycle Mecca - Adam Reinsfield

What makes Classic Motorcycle Mecca special?

For me – and I’m not a bike person – it’s the fact that the motorcycles are displayed as works of art. Being set in a gallery-style space really helps show off the best assets of the bikes. Plus, as people get distracted by the bikes, they often gloss past the artwork displayed around the space – but they’re as much of a delight as the bikes themselves. Some of them are originals and are extremely rare. They’re stunning.

What surprises people when they visit this attraction?

The fact that they are seeing so many high-quality bikes en-masse. There isn’t another collection like this in New Zealand and it’s truly amazing to see.

Why should people come to Invercargill and visit Classic Motorcycle Mecca?

If you’re an art buff, into architecture, or simply can appreciate something for what it is, Classic Motorcycle Mecca is for you – it’s not just for bike enthusiasts. The building is stunningly-restored, the collection of art and bikes is – as they say – truly world-class, and it is well worth a couple of hours exploring.

Dig This Invercargill - Catherine Skerrett

What makes Dig This Invercargill special?

There is literally nothing else like it in New Zealand. It is truly unique: the only place in the country where amateurs can get behind the controls of some seriously heavy pieces of machinery normally reserved for the experts, and put them through their paces.

What surprises people when they visit this attraction?

The feeling – it’s as thrilling as riding a rollercoaster.

Why should people come to Invercargill and visit Dig This?

It’s a great laugh, whether you’re having a go or visiting as a spectator. Where else are you able to crush an entire car? The machines are seriously grunty – it’s actually quite empowering.
